On February 26, 2018, Triona Carter was released from the Montgomery Women’s Facility after serving 20 years and 6 months. She has watched her two boys become handsome and determined young men from behind the walls of Tutwiler prison. Because of the AIM Visitation program, Triona was able to see her children monthly, at no cost to her mother.
AIM also assists families on our visitation program with back-to- school supplies, Christmas gifts and birthday gifts. With the help of a new grant we are able to offer a small scholarship to high school seniors accepted into college. The AIM visitation program is not just for mothers, it is for the children who are taken away from the mothers.

This month at Tutwiler we had a special meal cooked by our volunteer, Carol Lasater–ham, mashed potatoes and green beans, with fruit and rolls…cookies for dessert! It was cold outside, but the families had a great time together! Volunteers Sharon Christman and Gaile Randall helped the children make snowflake prints.  Alexis Morris played hot potato with the children, and Cassandra Carroll took photos and printed them.

This month, AIM welcomed the challenge of making incentives for 265 women at Tutwiler. Each year the prison hosts a Christmas decorating competition between each dorm. The women get extremely creative and everyone in the dorm participates in the decorating. This year the winning dorm received a pizza and salad party hosted by AIM along with candy, candy and more candy!

The second-place winners received snack bags and the Warden allowed us to take individual pictures of the women, to mail home to their families. They were extremely excited, some said their families had not seen them for three years. Some women have not had a picture taken in 10 years. Third place winners received a snack and journals.
This was a great opportunity for AIM to work with all incarcerated women, not just mothers. The women were extremely grateful–they made a thank you banner, using computers and printers donated through an anonymous donor.
